Old dams and new..

Today the team went on an educational visit to a "mature" sand dam in the "Star Ya Thange" community. It was a great example of the ways in which a sand dam can lead to successful terraced farming.

The community there no longer have to walk up to 20km for water and they have created a livelihood for themselves through their new crop yield. Vegetables on display included Kale, chillis, and tomatoes.

Here we have the head of the community explaining the importance of the dam to her community:

And the results of all their hard labour working on the terraces watered with water dug from the sand dams.

Finally the afternoon was spent relaxing in preparation for the next 4 days where the group will be carrying on with the New Soweto community on their own sand dam.
